Artistic representation of Patal Lok — the subterranean realm of the Nagas

📚 What is Patal Lok?

In Hindu mythology, the universe is divided into 14 lokas (worlds) — 7 higher (heavenly) realms and 7 lower (nether) realms.
Patal Lok (पाताल लोक) is the lowest and most enigmatic of the netherworlds.

  • It is often associated with darkness, riches, snakes, and mystical powers.
  • Ruled by Nagas (serpent beings), Patal Lok is described in ancient texts as a realm of beauty, luxury, and mystery.

🐍 Inhabitants of Patal Lok

🐉 Nagas

The powerful serpent deities, including Vasuki and Shesha, are believed to dwell here.

👹 Asuras & Danavas

Some texts mention Asuras (demons) and Danavas residing in the lower realms, including Patal Lok, often in opposition to the Devas (gods).

🏛️ Description in Ancient Texts

🔸 Vishnu Purana

Describes Patal Lok as more splendid than Swarga (heaven), adorned with precious gems, golden palaces, and fragrant breezes.

"Even the gods envy the beauty of Patal."

🔸 Bhagavata Purana

Narrates how Bali, the benevolent demon king, was sent to rule Patal after his humility impressed Lord Vishnu.

🔮 Symbolic Meaning

Patal Lok is not just a physical realm — it also represents the subconscious, hidden power, and untamed primal energies within us.

  • Nagas: Symbolize Kundalini energy
  • Darkness: Not evil, but depth and mystery
  • Wealth: Hidden talents and spiritual riches
